LAHORE: (Christian Times) – Asia Bibi, who has been sentenced to death by the lower courts over blasphemy charge in Pakistan, has been nominated for European Union’s (EU) prestigious Sakharov award.
This award is named after Russian scientist Andre Sakharov. It is pertinent to mention here that Asia Bibi had been sentenced to death in Pakistan over blasphemy charge back in 2010. She has an appeal case pending in Supreme Court on the matter, and the hearing of the case is postponed for indefinite period of time.
Asia Bibi had been sentenced to death in 2010 over a case filed after a heated debate with certain Muslim women in a village a year earlier (2009). She had been accused of having hurled ‘indecent remarks’ about Islam and the Prophet of Islam during the verbal tirade.
After being sentenced to death by the lower court, she was also declared guilty by the High Court and Asia Bibi was sentenced to death.
The case came to the global limelight when the late governor of Punjab Salman Taseer highlighted it in the media after meeting her in the jail and he openly called for amending the blasphemy law in order to curb its misuse.
Salman Taseer’s statement had been severely criticised by the ‘religious scholars’ and he was shot dead by a religious fanatic bodyguard in January 2011.
